A few months later, on another Sunday after church service, the missionary began a lengthy entry in his personal diary:

October 5, 1807

I am still searching for courage but have not yet been brave enough to send to Mother and Father my letter about the young slave boy. I keep looking for the young woman each Sunday, but neither she nor the boy has returned to the chapel since my first sighting of the child.

Surely John could not have had a relationship with this woman? How could he? She is a slave and he a white British man of good and careful upbringing. I shudder to think that he could have transgressed in this fashion. This is something that only a rogue without proper upbringing would contemplate. I am ashamed to admit it: I am worried that he may have fallen into disreputable ways and lost his moral compass. I am even more determined to find him now.

My baby brother used to love the Lord and the church... Has the love in his heart lost its way? What state of degradation must he have reached, if he has indeed taken advantage of a helpless slave woman?

As long as I am in Demerary, I will seek his whereabouts. If there are more children like this boy, I must find them too, yet I am torn. I am fearful of what I might find but anxious to know the truth.

My prayers are more specific each morning and evening. The salvation of my dear brother John’s soul leads my supplications each day. The needs of my own soul and those of the slaves come next.
